In the last 10 years, ultrasound examination of the scrotum and testes has become established as a convenient extension of the andrological examination of patients presenting with complaints of reproductive functions. A well-performed ultrasound examination is probably the single most informative diagnostic procedure to fast-track the correct diagnosis of intra-scrotal diseases. Experience and scope of diagnostic scrotal ultrasonography have expanded rapidly and a new reference textbook is now urgently required to update the recent growth in its application in andrological practice.
Since 2002, the Department of Medical Pathophysiology at the “Sapienza” University of Rome has an ultrasonography unit dedicated to andrological cases. This unit has performed over 7000 testicular ultrasound examinaminations in patients investigated for various conditions. All the images of these examinations have been saved and now form the basis of this new atlas-textbook. This core experience has been augmented by contributors of extremely valuable materials from 31 international experts to form probably the largest collections of ultrasound images, many in full colour, of scrotal pathology in the world.
